| My work explores the use of tactile and digital media
to enhance the intimacy and human connection facilitated by contemporary
communication technologies. Human intimacy is a significant but often neglected part of modern life. Due to dramatic social changes, more and more people exist in long-distance relationships. Common communication media such as email and text-messaging are impersonal and cannot convey the subtle emotional qualities needed for these distanced intimate communications. My work experiments with new modes of using communication technologies to provide an increased sensuality and sense of closeness. An artist with a background in fiber art and textile design, I am interested also in the potential of textiles as a mediator of human connections. The form of communication, the quality of the materials and objects used and the design of the environment in which the communication takes place become the essence of my work. |
