My practice begins by listening to Physis — the generative force through which the world continually comes into being beyond human intention.

This inquiry stems from two formative experiences. The first was spending my childhood in Los Alamos, New Mexico — a town created for the development of the atomic bomb. In the vast desert landscape, I experienced moments when the boundary between myself and the world became indistinct. I remember finding a sense of ease in the smallness of my own existence, while at the same time feeling an affection for the invisible relationships that sustain it.

The second was experiencing the Great Hanshin Earthquake. Witnessing the fragility of the order that sustained everyday life made me deeply aware that science, language, and social systems are never omnipotent before forces beyond human control. Since then, I have questioned ways of seeing that place humans at the centre of the world, while turning my attention towards processes that persist beyond human intention.

Modern rationalism has greatly expanded our understanding of the world by dividing and classifying it. At the same time, separating subject from object, humans from nature, and mind from body has made it more difficult to perceive the complex relationships through which the world takes shape. Drawing at times on scientific thought and observation, my practice is grounded in embodied fieldwork. Through multisensory installations using sound, light, scent, photography, moving image, and materials, I explore invisible movements and relationships.

In recent years, my research has focused on wetlands and mud. Within these environments, living beings and matter emerge, decay, accumulate, and transform into something else, each within their own temporalities. As my research has expanded from Kyoto to Ireland and France, I have become increasingly interested in how the specific histories and memories of a place coexist with things that inhabit different temporalities — microbial activity, decomposition, flowing water, geological change, human memory, and the unconscious. Rather than reducing these differences to a single order, I observe how they intersect and affect one another while retaining their own distinct temporalities.

Through encounters with environments and others, the boundaries between inside and outside, consciousness and body, self and world can at times become uncertain. My work does not seek to romanticise harmony between humans and nature, nor to present nature as something that can be fully understood or managed through human reason. Through multisensory installations, I seek to make these often invisible movements and relationships perceptible through embodied experience, allowing us to intuitively sense that we do not stand outside the world as observers, but exist within its complex relationships. By listening to the quiet movements of Physis, I invite viewers to encounter the world not as a fixed object of knowledge, but as an ongoing process of becoming.
